The Three Four-Homer Games of 2025

When Kyle Schwarber hit 4 home runs in the Phils 19-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night, August 28, 2025, he became only the 21st player to hit 4 HRs in a game. Amazingly, three players have hit 4 HRs in a game this season: Eugenio Suarez for the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 26, Nick Kurtz for the Oakland Athletics on July 25, and now Schwarber.

Schwarber had 16 total bases (TB) and 9 RBI. He went 4 for 6 and amassed 28 total Bases Generated (tBG), a stat that counts bases generated for base runners as well as those gained by the batter and bases gained as a base runner, like a steal. (TB counts only those bases gained by the batter from his hits.) As a result of that tremendous performance, Schwarber will be tied for 37th place on the Most tBG by a Player in a Game when the report is updated with 2025 data:

Schwarber’s 9 RBI is a Phillies team record for a single game, but his 28 tBG is not. That Phillies record is held by Gavvy Cravath, who raked 30 tBG in the Phils 14-6 win over the Reds on August 8, 1915. Gavvy had 4 doubles and 8 RBI in that game.

Kurtz, a 22-year-old rookie from Lancaster, PA, who is nicknamed the Big Amish, went 6 for 6, adding a double and a single to his 4 HRs. For the game, he totaled 19 TB, 8 RBI, and 29 tBG. As a result, the Big Amish will be tied for 23rd when the report is updated for 2025. The A’s won 15-3.

Suarez went 4 for 4 but had only 5 RBI and 16 TB. With 19 tBG, his game won’t make the report because we cut it off of 24 tBG. Oddly, the Dbacks mustered only 3 other hits in the game and lost to the Braves 8-7.

Shohei Ohtani hit only 3 HRs in his monster game on Sept. 19, 2024, in Miami last year, but his performance may be even more impressive than Schwarber’s, Kurtz’s, or Suarez’s. By going 6 for 6 with 3 HRs, 2 doubles, a single, and 2 steals, he garnered an epic 33 tBG. He’s currently tied for 5th most tBG in a game (going back to 1911). If Ohtani hadn’t gotten thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple in the 3rd inning (thereby losing 2 tBG), he’d have earned 35 tBG and a tie for 2nd. By the way, the Dodgers pasted the Marlins that day 20-4.

Shohei Ohtani (53687576722)

The player with the most tBG in a single game (back to 1911) is catcher Walker Cooper, who on July 6, 1949, generated 37 tBG for the Cincinnati Reds in a 23-4 win over the Cubs.
